I don't know how the term "Small Jumbo" came about, but I suspect it was coined by someone with a sense of humor.

In this case, "Jumbo" refers to the European curvy, deep-waisted overall shape, not the size. The lower bout of the SJ is only 1/8 inch smaller than the dreadnaught, but you'd never guess it. The waist makes it feel like a smaller guitar, and it is certainly easier to hold sitting down.
